Slavic Studies Curatorial Assistant – Stanford, CA

What: The Stanford University Libraries (SUL) currently has one full-time (100% FTE) position available for a Library Specialist IV to provide support for planning, developing and managing collections in various subject areas, primarily Slavic and Baltic, but including other Humanities and Area Studies fields. The Curatorial Assistant will provide assistance to Curators in the acquisition of current and out-of-print publications, both print and digital, as well as rare books, manuscripts and other materials destined for Special Collections, perform limited but high level reference assistance and bibliographic instruction, and may be asked to train student assistants for special projects. The Curatorial Assistant will also assist the Curators or Bibliographers as appropriate in preparation of materials for courses, orientation sessions, and related public presentations, assist in the creation and maintenance of the subject specialists’ resources pages on the SUL web site and provide support for exhibit preparation and production of guides or other aids to research. The Curatorial Assistant will also assist in the preparation of materials for donor relations and in the management and coordination of gifts and of established exchange programs. The Curatorial Assistant will be expected to independently apply a professional level of knowledge in dealing with booksellers and other vendors of research materials both in the United States and abroad, including the UK and other European countries that may require correspondence in foreign languages.

Required Skills of Note: A B.A. in a relevant subject, plus three or more years of experience in an academic library, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Proficiency in written Russian and English is required.
  • Must have subject knowledge associated with undergraduate course work in a specialized subject
  • Ability to understand and communicate library policy
  • Experience with supervision of lower level staff
  • Demonstrated experience in using judgment and initiative to analyze and recommend new procedures
